The best places to eat “banh mi” in Hoi An

Banh mi is a delicious Vietnamese baguette, filled with vegetables, paté, meat, sauce or whatever else you want in it.  The French colonists introduced the baguette in the late 1800s, and ever since then, it’s become a beloved dish in Vietnam. However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that banh mi became as popular as it is now. After the war, there were many refugees fleeing from the north to south, and in order to earn money, they started to sell banh mi in Ho Chi Minh City since it served as an easy and highly appreciated street food choice.

These days, banh mi is known worldwide and thanks to the million tourists coming each year to Vietnam, it’s becoming even more popular outside of Vietnam. But of course, some of the absolute best banh mi is found inside the country, and perhaps more specifically, in Hoi An. Here are some of the best places to eat banh mi in Hoi An.

1. Banh Mi Phuong

2b Phan Chu Trinh

Perhaps best known as “the best banh mi in the world” – at least according to the late Anthony Bourdain, this place boomed after he made his trip to Vietnam and gave Banh Mi Phuong its good reputation. This little restaurant might not look like anything special if you just look at it from the outside, but it’s what you order that matters. Crispy light baguettes are served with whatever toppings you choose – egg, beef, vegetables, paté, spicy sauces, etc. You get to choose what you want to put in your baguette. Since it’s a very popular place, you’ll have to be prepared to queue for a while. Usually it doesn’t take long since banh mi is a type of street food that doesn’t take long to make, so don’t get discouraged by the long queues. But once you’ve gotten your hands on one, it might be difficult for you to eat something else than that. It’s usually eaten as a lunch “snack”, but you can really get it for any meal of the day. And the cherry on top? It only costs 20,000 VND, which is not even 1 dollar! Imagine that. So you can eat however many you want to without worrying about breaking your budget. Quite a good deal, right?

2. Madam Khanh

Madam Khanh, also known as the “banh mi queen”, certainly knows how to make great banh mi’s and you can tell by the amount of people they receive everyday. Her and her family gets up early in the morning everyday to start preparing ingredients and they go buy the bread in one of the most reputable bakeries in town. As with Banh Mi Phuong, the prices here are also really affordable, and even if it’s gotten more popular throughout the years, the prices are still kept low.

3. Banh Mi Chay

Now vegans can also enjoy this snack in Hoi An. This food cart serves only vegetarian and vegan banh mi’s, so you can rest assure that your banh mi is fully vegan. They open early as well if you’d like to eat it for breakfast, the ladies who sell the baguettes are really friendly and they do it all for the price of just 10,000 VND per banh mi – that’s even half the price of the other baguettes! And if you’re tired of eating banh mi (no one really becomes tired of it), you can get a glass of soy milk or even vegan pho, a highly popular Vietnamese noodle soup. It’s a vegan paradise! Even if you eat meat, you will really appreciate this place.

4. Banh Mi Lanh
